The Ministry of Defense, under the leadership of centrist Nuno Melo, has expressed its deep sorrow over the death of a soldier from the Military Emergency Support Regiment in Abrantes, as stated in a condolence note published on social media platform X.
“The Ministry of National Defense extends its heartfelt condolences to the family and the Portuguese Army,” the statement concluded.
The Army has initiated an internal investigation today to determine the “causes and circumstances” surrounding the death of the 24-year-old soldier, originally from Tabuaço, Viseu.
“It is with pain and deep sorrow that the Portuguese Army announces the death of a soldier, which occurred early this morning at the Regiment of Military Emergency Support in Abrantes,” the Army conveyed in a note sent to Lusa.

According to the Army, the Military Judicial Police has been notified, and an investigation has been launched “to ascertain the causes and circumstances of the incident.”
It was also reported that immediate first aid was provided at the scene, the emergency medical service INEM was activated, and psychological support was made available to the family and the other soldiers on duty.
“The Portuguese Army profoundly laments this irreplaceable loss and extends its deepest condolences to the bereaved family, expressing solidarity with all those who shared life and service with the soldier,” the note stated.
