The Polícia Judiciária identified a 14-year-old boy as being responsible for several forest fires that have occurred in the Fafe area over the past few years.
Over the last four years, during the summer months, the locations of Seidões, Ardegão, and Arnozela have suffered from numerous forest fires.
Due to the persistent occurrence of fires in these areas, continuous investigation efforts were undertaken, which led to the identification of the young suspect.
The minor conducted incursions into various local forest areas, sometimes using a scooter for mobility. Upon reaching his chosen locations, the suspect, a resident of Seidões, initiated fires using direct flames, lighting matches to start them. He would then flee the scene and seek refuge at his home.
These parishes have been systematically plagued by forest fires, sometimes occurring daily.
“The minor acted from a place of frustration and revolt, due to his poor academic performance and unstable social relationships. In some instances, the possibility that he acted in a group cannot be ruled out,” stated the Polícia Judiciária in their report.
The areas affected by the fires are located in regions with a high potential for spreading into large forested areas, posing significant risks, exacerbated by the abundant combustible material and the region’s terrain.
The teenager confessed to the crimes when questioned by authorities.
The case has now been referred to the Public Ministry for further proceedings, particularly through the Family and Juvenile Court.
