The Cape Verdean government declared a state of calamity in the islands of São Vicente and Santo Antão.
Paulo Rocha, Cape Verde’s Minister of Internal Administration, warned via Rádio de Cabo Verde (RCV) that the death toll might rise, as people are still missing.
“The City Council and the Government must conduct an assessment. It may take a few days. The first step is to locate the missing people and ensure their safety, but we will intervene where necessary,” he added.
Domingos Tavares, President of the National Civil Protection and Fire Service, confirmed that the rains have caused extensive damage to public infrastructure, homes, and vehicles, in addition to the fatalities.
Operations at Cesária Évora International Airport on the Cape Verdean island of São Vicente are currently restricted, as announced by Transportes Aéreos de Cabo Verde (TACV).
