“They are just an indication […], a positive indication, it’s true, but we are waiting calmly and with respect for the vote of the people of Lisbon,” stated António Valle, the campaign director of the coalition “Por ti, Lisboa” – PSD/CDS-PP/IL, in a brief statement at 8:30 p.m., without taking questions.
António Valle was speaking in the room of a hotel near the Marquês de Pombal, where the candidacy led by Carlos Moedas is following the election night, the same place where four years ago the PSD mayor celebrated his election as president of the Lisbon City Council.
“This was a demanding campaign, carried out with immense dedication, at a time when we were all tested, but it was also a campaign in which many Lisbon residents recognized the work of President Carlos Moedas,” said the campaign director, adding that projections point to “great confidence” around the “Por ti, Lisboa” project.
The campaign members are therefore “very optimistic” while awaiting the results.
“Nevertheless, I want to be very clear: we will only talk about results when there are official data. Until then, our stance is one of serenity and respect for the democratic process,” he emphasized.
In the same statement, António Valle said that “this night is about Lisbon, regardless of the result, it is about all Lisbon residents without exception,” thanking all who trusted in Carlos Moedas’ candidacy and all the people of Lisbon.
Despite television polls indicating a tie between Carlos Moedas (PSD/CDS-PP/IL) and Alexandra Leitão (PS/Livre/BE/PAN) at the time they were released, at 8:00 p.m., supporters of the “Por ti, Lisboa” coalition reacted with enthusiasm and shouted “victory.”
Carlos Moedas arrived at the hotel at 6:20 p.m. and expressed being “very calm,” noting that “it is a very special day for democracy” and expressing himself as “very confident,” especially because he trusts the people of Lisbon.
In these elections, the candidates for the presidency of the Lisbon City Council included Carlos Moedas (PSD/CDS-PP/IL), Alexandra Leitão (PS/Livre/BE/PAN), João Ferreira (CDU-PCP/PEV), Bruno Mascarenhas (Chega), Ossanda Líber (New Right), José Almeida (Volt), Adelaide Ferreira (ADN), Tomaz Ponce Dentinho (PPM/PTP), and Luís Mendes (RIR).
Currently, the municipal executive consists of seven elected members from the “Novos Tempos” coalition – PSD/CDS-PP/MPT/PPM/Aliança, seven from the “Mais Lisboa” coalition – PS/Livre, two from the CDU, and one from the BE.
