“The engineer Carlos Moedas knows, in conscience and coherence, that he does not have many alternatives, and therefore I understand his discomfort. The moment is of great, great sadness, but we are well aware of what Carlos Moedas demanded from the mayor Fernando Medina, and therefore I think his conscience asks him, in coherence with what he said, to make a decision,” responded Eurico Brilhante Dias to journalists at the end of a meeting with the Government.
The parliamentary leader of the PS was questioned about the position taken today by the former PS leader Pedro Nuno Santos, who argued that the president of the Lisbon City Council should assume political responsibilities following the accident of the Glória elevator.
“Decisions are sometimes difficult, but engineer Carlos Moedas knows what the only decision he has to make is to maintain political coherence,” he maintained.
Eurico Brilhante Dias refused to comment on Pedro Nuno Santos’ position and noted that he was speaking personally.
“I will only say that engineer Carlos Moedas knows that we should not demand from others what we are not prepared to fulfill,” he initially responded.
The former socialist leader Pedro Nuno Santos argued today that the president of the Lisbon City Council must assume political responsibility for the accident at the Glória Elevator, considering that Carlos Moedas “is a prisoner” of his declarations about Fernando Medina.
“I have seen some people trying to avoid the inevitable: the assumption of political responsibilities by the current President of the CML. Moedas is a prisoner of his own statements in 2021, when he demanded the resignation of Fernando Medina,” wrote the deputy and former PS secretary-general on social media.
The Glória elevator in Lisbon derailed on Wednesday, causing 16 fatalities and injuring two dozen.
The Government declared a national day of mourning on Thursday.
The Glória elevator is operated by Carris, connecting the Restauradores to Jardim de São Pedro de Alcântara in Bairro Alto, a route of about 265 meters, and is highly sought after by tourists.
