The mayor of Lisbon Carlos Moedas, said today he was “open to reaching an agreement” with the National Union of Drivers and Other Workers, which delivered a notice of strike during the days of World Youth Day.
“I am open to dialogue with the union, with all the other unions, and it is very important to know that last week we reached an agreement with the STML and the STAL. I don’t see why we can’t reach an agreement here too”, said Carlos Moedas, referring to the municipal and local administration unions, respectively.
The president was speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the delivery of 64 keys to houses in Entrecampos.
The National Union of Drivers and Other Workers (SNMOT) delivered on Monday a strike notice to coincide with the dates of the World Youth Day, assuring that it is open to dialogue with the Lisbon City Council.
In statements to PP, the vice president of SNMOT stressed that the notice – for the period between August 01 and 06 – is directed mainly to drivers and messengers, workers assigned to the removal of waste, but covers all workers in the municipality.
According to Manuel Oliveira, a request for a meeting was made to the capital’s mayor, Carlos Moedas, on June 23, but so far the union has not received a response.
Lisbon was the city chosen by Pope Francis for the next edition of the World Youth Day, which will take place between August 1st and 6th, with the main ceremonies taking place in Parque Eduardo VII and Parque Tejo, north of Parque das Nações, on the riverside of the Tagus, on land owned by the municipalities of Lisbon and Loures.
