During the biweekly debate in the Assembly of the Republic, the sole deputy of BE questioned the Prime Minister about “which norms of the draft labor law revision aim to adapt work to artificial intelligence and digital innovations.”
In response, Luís Montenegro criticized those who referred to specific changes the Government intends to implement in labor legislation, asserting it as “a strategy to divert the discussion from what is important.”
“We have presented changes to more than 100 articles, there are over 100 changes. We are now available in social consultation to amend the content of these changes, and later we will also be available to do the same in the Assembly of the Republic,” he stated.
“The goal is for the final result to enshrine the adaptation of the law to the current demands of our economy, the functioning of our economy, the robustness of our economy, the functioning of our companies. Therefore, from that point of view, all the articles collaborate to achieve this aim,” he added.
Montenegro accused the parties of wanting “to divert attention because, in reality, they do not want anything to change.”
“That is what the deputies desire, that is your struggle. It will also be your position when we discuss this in the Assembly of the Republic, but on that occasion, we will go norm by norm to see the rationale for the changes and the ultimate goal of this entire legislative amendment project,” he mentioned.
In her reply, with time still remaining for her intervention, Mariana Mortágua insisted, asking again, “what are the changes specifically concerning the modernization of the labor market and its adaptation to new technologies.”
“I would like you to answer us, because otherwise, we are forced to assume that either you do not want to respond or do not know the draft you presented,” she stated.
Luís Montenegro retorted simply: “I have already answered, and the deputy does not have to presume anything, she has to accept the answer, I believe.”
