Montenegro advises voting for mayors “aligned” in partnership with the Government

Luís Montenegro joined the campaign trail today, standing alongside candidate Luís Souto Miranda (PSD/CDS-PP/PPM) for the Aveiro City Council for the second time.

“It is time to tell the Portuguese people: it is crucial to choose well-qualified mayors, those who are better aligned, to establish a partnership with the national government to bring the consequences of our decisions into people’s lives: more income, more rewards for work,” he stated.

Montenegro emphasized that, considering the country’s economic and financial situation and its numerous challenges, it is essential “to ensure a strong partnership between local and central government, between municipalities and the Republic’s Government.”

“No one is better than our candidates to offer this connection to the Portuguese people, to provide this combination of efforts,” he declared.

According to Montenegro, political support is “built from the bottom up,” stating that strengthening confidence in the PSD locally also enhances “the government’s capacity to continue executing its program and improving people’s lives.”

The Prime Minister also referred to the State Budget proposal for 2026, presented on Thursday, asserting that the document “is beneficial for those in government and even for the opposition, which has a document before it that can facilitate national interests.”

In addition to Luís Souto Miranda, candidates running in the municipal elections in Aveiro include his brother, Alberto Souto (PS)—who previously served as mayor from 1998 to 2005—Miguel Gomes (IL), Isabel Tavares (CDU), Bruno Fonseca (Livre), Diogo Machado (Chega), Paulo Alves (Nós, Cidadãos!), Ana Rita Moreira (PAN), and João Moniz (BE).

Before the penultimate campaign event in Aveiro—the PSD leader will conclude in Espinho, where he resides—the PSD campaign made a brief stop in Ílhavo, expressing support for PSD/CDS-PP candidate Rui Dias to regain a municipality the social democrats lost in the last elections.
