Montenegro assures that Government “really wants to change” the foreigners law

Luís Montenegro issued a warning during the final moments of the biweekly parliamentary debate, in a discussion with PSD parliamentary leader Hugo Soares.

Montenegro outlined the reforms the Government has enacted or plans to pursue, including changes to the legal framework governing the entry, residence, exit, and removal of foreigners from national territory. A new version of these changes was presented today by PSD and CDS-PP, following the rejection of the first draft by the Constitutional Court.

In the debate, the leader of Chega—who initially supported the first version—criticized PSD and CDS-PP for not consulting him on the amendments. This prompted another response from the Prime Minister in one of his final remarks during the discussion.

“We genuinely want to amend the foreigner law; we are not among those who cling to a thesis that may not align with the Constitutional Court’s view, only to keep things unchanged,” he stated.

Montenegro reiterated the need to emphasize to “certain deputies” that if a new draft does not adhere to the Constitution, “even under the Constitutional Court’s interpretation,” the outcome will be “that nothing changes.”

“Perhaps that is what some want, to later use it as an argument. But not us; we truly wish to solve the issue,” he emphasized.
