The Prime Minister today called on Israel to show restraint in its response to the attack carried out by Iran last weekend, and said he was in favor of sanctions against Tehran’s executive, as long as they contributed to calming tensions.
“First of all, we must condemn Iran’s attack on the State of Israel and, at the same time, call for restraint from a possible reaction by Israel, which I believe benefits no one,” said Luís Montenegro as he entered his first meeting of the European Council in Brussels.
The Prime Minister said that Portugal could join in imposing more sanctions on Tehran, but warned that it had to be “with a view to being a consequence that doesn’t create more violence”.
Regarding the possibility of including Iranian arms in the sanctions regime, Luís Montenegro said that “it is still premature to talk” about hypotheses.
