Montenegro descends Chiado promising dialogue and combating information manipulation

The Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, addressed journalists midway through his walk down Rua do Carmo. He was asked about allegations that the political party Chega has been using fake social media accounts.

Montenegro emphasized the importance of ensuring the reliability of information and valuing the role of the traditional media. “I have given absolute priority to the authenticity of information and the appreciation of media outlets, combating manipulation and disinformation,” he stated. He further called on traditional media outlets to maintain their focus on fighting disinformation.

Without directly referencing Chega, Montenegro criticized those who utilize digital platforms and social networks to spread falsehoods and manipulation. “Politicians and political parties that exploit these means are not worthy of public trust,” he asserted.

He cautioned against following news stories whose origins are unclear, as these are often generated on social networks.

Regarding the upcoming Sunday elections, Montenegro highlighted the social agreements his government has forged over the past 11 months and pledged to continue this dialogue if re-elected. He reiterated his commitment to safeguarding the welfare state, controlling immigration, and ensuring political stability, emphasizing that Portugal needs a government legitimized by public will and capable of dialogue.

“Our government has managed to secure 19 agreements within public administration alone, and a tripartite agreement in social consultation with unions and business associations, along with understandings with the social sector, including charities and private social solidarity institutions,” he noted.

Montenegro expressed optimism about the country’s economic outlook, noting that 2024 was a year marked by complex international circumstances where Portugal achieved favorable economic and financial outcomes. “Despite European and global instability in 2024, Portugal was the country where people’s income grew most due to tax cuts and wage increases. This path toward valuing people, generating wealth to combat poverty, and addressing the country’s structural problems is what this government presents,” he explained.

During the descent of Chiado, Montenegro was accompanied by his wife, Carla Montenegro, Lisbon’s Mayor, Carlos Moedas, the President of the Assembly of the Republic, and members of his government, including Finance Minister Joaquim Miranda Sarmento, who leads the Lisbon AD list.

In the forefront were CDS President Nuno Melo, former Social Democratic leader Manuela Ferreira Leite, PSD’s first Vice-President Leonor Beleza, and other government members such as Miguel Pinto Luz, António Leitão Amaro, and Margarida Balseiro Lopes.
