The head of state is undergoing surgery for an “incarcerated hernia” at São João Hospital in Porto, where he was admitted today after feeling unwell, revealed the chairman of the hospital’s board of directors.
The Prime Minister’s office stated that Luís Montenegro has already spoken with Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and is monitoring the situation.
In a statement to journalists, the president of São João Hospital, Maria João Baptista, said Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa “is in good spirits” and that the emergency surgery he is undergoing is “of low surgical and anesthetic risk.”
“It is expected that he will stay with us for the next few days,” she said, noting that the head of state was admitted “with indisposition and vomiting.”
The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, was admitted today to São João Hospital in Porto after feeling unwell following an indigestion, indicated the Presidency of the Republic.
On its official website, the Presidency of the Republic explained that the head of state felt unwell “when returning from Amarante, from the funeral of Engineer António Mota,” in Amarante.
“The doctors of the Presidency of the Republic deemed it better to conduct medical examinations, currently being carried out by the medical team of this National Health Service hospital, before making the return trip to Lisbon,” the statement added.

The head of state, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, will undergo surgery on Monday night for an incarcerated hernia. The team at São João Hospital notes that the procedure is “low risk,” emphasizing that the President is in good spirits. This is not the first time Marcelo has undergone surgery for a hernia.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, 76, presided over the morning’s celebrations at Praça dos Restauradores in Lisbon, honoring the Heroes of the Restoration and the War of Acclamation, which commemorates the restoration of national independence in 1640, before attending the funeral ceremonies of the former president of Mota-Engil, António Mota.
On Saturday, the President of the Republic visited the Food Bank Against Hunger in Alcântara, Lisbon.
In the press statement around 10:00 PM, Maria João Baptista also mentioned that the decision to proceed with surgery was due to Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa having already undergone a previous surgery for a hernia similar to the current condition.
According to the representative, a hernia “is an area of the abdominal wall that is weaker and allows a portion of the intestine to pass through the tissues,” compromising “the ability to irrigate the tissues.”
