Luís Montenegro attended the Feira do Folar de Valpaços today in the district of Vila Real. This event traditionally takes place on the weekend before Easter, attracting many visitors who come to purchase the meat cake that is a staple on the tables of the region.
The leader of the Social Democratic Party was greeted with applause, kisses, and numerous selfies and photographs as he toured the exhibition stands showcasing local products. Montenegro remarked that the fair is “a representation of the identity of this land, this region.”
“It’s an opportunity to promote local products, to facilitate their trade, and thereby boost the local economy. It is also a chance for socializing among people, among families. I have met people here from almost all over the country, especially from the northern region,” he noted.
While mingling with attendees, he spoke to an elderly individual who made a request to Montenegro, who is also the Prime Minister and a candidate from the AD coalition (Social Democratic Party/CDS-PP): “Valpaços needs two things: homes for the elderly, as no one talks about this, which is evident here, and you can send immigrants as there is plenty of land to work on and houses to live in.”
In response, Montenegro thanked him for the suggestions and assured that he would address these topics.
A teacher also took the opportunity to congratulate Luís Montenegro and express gratitude “for everything you have done for teachers.” “It’s the first time someone has looked after us, so please keep the Minister of Education,” she emphasized.
The PSD leader has consistently asserted that agriculture is a strategic sector as it provides the country with “more food autonomy,” while also ensuring “territorial occupation” and enabling the growth of other economic activities.
When asked by journalists about the warm welcome in Valpaços, Luís Montenegro said it feels good to have his work recognized and respected. However, he stressed that what truly gratifies him is people’s respect for what the Government is doing.
“We are in a period where it is vital to value politics. When public service and political roles are violently criticized, it disrespects those who manage public welfare, which is detrimental to democracy,” he stated.
During this visit to the Feira do Folar de Valpaços, Luís Montenegro was joined by Health Minister Ana Paula Martins, who leads the AD list for the district of Vila Real, as well as other candidates for the legislative elections on May 18 and local elections.
