In a message posted on his official account on the X platform, Luís Montenegro paid a “heartfelt tribute to António Mota,” describing him as an “entrepreneur who made a Portuguese family business global.”
“He leaves an indelible mark of ambition, leadership, humanity, and success. My condolences, on a personal note and on behalf of the Government, to the family, employees, and friends,” added the Prime Minister.
The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, also sent “heartfelt sympathies” to António Mota’s family, acknowledging his impact on “the business world and Portuguese society in general.”
The former president of Mota-Engil, António Mota, passed away today in Porto at the age of 71, the group announced, remembering him as a “historic leader,” “charismatic,” a “visionary businessman” and a “man of great humanity.”

“The Mota-Engil Group deeply regrets to inform that engineer António Mota, the historical leader of the group [of which] he assumed the presidency for more than 27 years, from 1995 until January 2023, passed away this morning in the city of Porto,” reads a statement released today.
