The office of the Prime Minister announced that Montenegro will attend a meeting at the Élysée Palace starting at 09:45 (08:45 in Lisbon).
Alongside Portugal, participants in the meeting include representatives from Germany, Belgium, Canada, Cyprus, Croatia, Denmark, Spain, Slovenia, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, the Netherlands, Poland, the United Kingdom, the Czech Republic, Romania, Sweden, Turkey, and Ukraine. The NATO Secretary-General, the President of the European Commission, and the President of the European Council, former Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa, are also in attendance.
This summit follows recent meetings in Paris and London aimed at providing “security assurances” to Ukraine, which was invaded by Russian troops in February 2022, as US President Donald Trump attempts to broker a potential peace agreement with Russia.
The purpose of the summit is to “finalize” efforts concerning “short-term” military support for Ukraine, developing a “sustainable Ukrainian army model to prevent future Russian invasions,” and addressing the “security guarantees that European armies can provide,” including ground deployments in Ukraine, stated the French President last week.
On March 15, the Portuguese Prime Minister had participated in a teleconference meeting in London focused on achieving a ceasefire in Ukraine, emphasizing that Portugal stands with its allies “to ensure peace and security today and in the future.”
Luís Montenegro joined the meeting via videoconference from the Ministry of National Defense in Lisbon, where European Council President António Costa was also present.
