Montenegro praises “excellence of innovation” of the Botton-Champalimaud center

“It was with profound recognition and gratitude that I visited the Botton-Champalimaud Pancreatic Cancer Centre and was able to verify the excellence of innovation, research, and treatment conditions that this endeavor offers to people,” considered the Prime Minister, who read to journalists a message he wrote in this institution’s honor book in Lisbon.

The head of the executive and the Minister of Health, Ana Paula Martins, visited the facilities of the Botton-Champalimaud Pancreatic Cancer Centre today, which is dedicated to pancreatic cancer research and treatment, for a visit that lasted about an hour.

At the end, Luís Montenegro did not want to make statements to journalists, only reading the message he left in the honor book.

The visit was guided by a delegation including the president of the Champalimaud Foundation and State Counselor, Leonor Beleza – who recently rejected a presidential candidacy after the PSD Secretary-General, Hugo Soares, added her name to a list of possible candidates for Belém from the PSD area – and the institution’s vice-president, João Silveira Botelho, whom Montenegro praised.

“On this occasion, I want to leave a word of enormous congratulations to Dr. Leonor Beleza and Dr. João Silveira Botelho for the remarkable work they have developed in favor of health and progress in the treatment of highly problematic pathologies,” he emphasized.

Luís Montenegro heard explanations about the type of research and treatments done at this location and visited recent facilities, some of which are not yet in use.

In the message he left in the honor book and read aloud, the Prime Minister highlighted that “the humanist vision that emanates from every detail and the desire to reconcile treatments with the well-being of users is truly touching.”

“Having had the opportunity to be here and see this recognition also coming from other geographies, such as the United States of America, I reinforce in myself the conviction that Portugal can, in any area, be at the forefront of progress in the world,” considered the head of the executive.

The Botton-Champalimaud Center, dedicated to the study and treatment of pancreatic cancer, was inaugurated in September 2021 and resulted from a partnership between the Champalimaud Foundation and the couple Maurício and Charlotte Botton, who contributed 50 million euros for its construction.

This is the first center in the world dedicated simultaneously to research and treatment of one of the deadliest types of cancer.
