At the closing session of the 21st edition of PSD’s Summer University, which concludes today in Castelo de Vide (Portalegre), Luís Montenegro took advantage of the recent upgrade of the Republic’s rating by a financial rating agency to advocate for the rigor of public accounts.
“It will be very difficult for the opposition to find arguments to doubt the essence of the State Budget,” he said, urging not to dramatize the approval of this document as if it were a “matter of life or death.”
Montenegro stated that he does not expect “the opposition to applaud the Government’s measures” — although he argued that the executive deserves it — and remarked that “no one will stop being in the opposition because of the Budget,” nor will the PSD/CDS-PP majority cease to be in government.
Regarding the meetings that will begin next week with the parties, the Prime Minister expressed the Government’s willingness to listen and incorporate contributions from the opposition but issued a warning.
“Those who focus only on political maneuvers and communication management will fail the country and people will not forget it,” he asserted.
Additionally, he stated that the Government will not negotiate “on the basis of any ultimatum or red lines,” but “on the basis of moderation, on the basis of a constructive spirit.”
