During a speech at Calçadão da Quarteira in the Algarve, Luís Montenegro expressed his belief that, similar to less severe crimes, there might be an accelerated, more streamlined procedural regime for the most serious offenses, particularly when substantial evidence is collected, such as in cases of being caught in the act.
“This can be applied to more serious crimes, starting with those who deliberately cause forest fires,” he stated.
Montenegro emphasized that “someone caught in the act of igniting forest fires, with a legal framework that currently exceeds summary processes, is evidently not within that scope.”
“Why can’t they be subjected to a faster process and penalized, resulting in greater tranquility and a more effective justice system? This would also deter criminal behavior,” he added.
