“What we are seeing is that stability and governability conditions translate into improved quality of life and well-being for the population,” stated Luís Montenegro.
Luís Montenegro, who also serves as the Prime Minister of the PSD/CDS-PP coalition government, presently in a caretaker capacity, addressed journalists during a visit to the construction site of the Madeira Central and University Hospital in Funchal. This visit was part of the pre-electoral campaign for the legislative elections scheduled for May 18.
“We view Madeira as we view all of Portugal, recognizing our capabilities and having faith,” he remarked, further adding, “We know how to do things, we know how to be at the forefront of technology and knowledge.”
Accompanied by the regional PSD leader and head of the Madeira executive, Miguel Albuquerque, Montenegro expressed willingness to adjust the state’s co-financing for the hospital’s construction, in light of rising material and labor costs, to ensure the project is completed on schedule.
The project, expected to exceed the initial estimate of 350 million euros, including the procurement of medical and hospital equipment, is funded equally by the autonomous region and the Portuguese State. Construction began in 2021 and is expected to conclude in 2028.
“Naturally, we are willing to find a solution for this long-term project. We are committed to fulfilling our promise and ensuring this project will indeed be realized,” he affirmed.
The Social Democratic leader, who also visited ARDITI – Regional Agency for the Development of Research, Technology, and Innovation today, highlighted the “significant victory” of PSD/Madeira in the regional elections on March 23 and the formation of the regional government in coalition with CDS-PP.
“It brought stability and governance conditions to the region, which is what we are also seeking for the country now,” he emphasized.
Luís Montenegro stated his strong commitment to enlightening voters and ushering in a “four-year cycle of political stability and governance” for Portugal, building upon the “first 11 months of work” which he believes have been well-received by the Portuguese citizens.
“We aim to strengthen our results both globally and in the Madeira context,” he stated, reinforcing, “I have good reasons to view this electoral cycle in Madeira positively, seeing that we can enhance our parliamentary representation in the Assembly of the Republic and contribute from here to a more stable, effective government able to implement our ongoing plans for the country’s transformation.”
Luís Montenegro emphasized his goal for Portugal to become a modern country and a reference for stability.
“A country that seizes opportunities in a world facing dangers, in a Europe confronting significant challenges, where we stand as a beacon of stability—financial, economic, and political,” he stated.
The Social Democrat leader will participate today at 6:00 PM in Funchal in a session introducing the PSD candidates for the Madeira constituency in the legislative elections, with Pedro Coelho leading the list.
The archipelago elects six deputies to the Assembly of the Republic, currently represented by three social democrats, two socialists, and one from Chega.
