More carbon monoxide poisonings in 2025. INEM issues warning

Data from the Poison Information Centre (CIAV) of INEM shows that in 2024, 18 cases of carbon monoxide poisoning were recorded, including two children.

By November 24, 2025, there have already been 28 recorded cases, involving 22 adults and six children, CIAV reports, emphasizing that most incidents were linked to the use of heaters, water heaters, or stoves in poorly ventilated areas.

As temperatures fall and the use of home heating equipment increases, CIAV reminds in a note sent to Lusa “the need for safe operation of appliances that can produce carbon monoxide, such as fireplaces, heaters, water heaters, or gas heaters.”

“Carbon monoxide is an invisible and odorless gas that can cause poisoning with non-specific symptoms like headaches, nausea, malaise, or drowsiness. Prevention remains the best way to avoid potentially severe situations,” it highlights.

The Poison Information Centre stresses the importance of preventative measures, such as inspecting and maintaining equipment before use and avoiding their use in completely closed spaces.

It also recommends proper ventilation in rooms where the equipment is operating and, when experiencing symptoms like headaches, nausea, or fainting, to open doors and windows, move people outside, and contact 112 or CIAV (800 250 250).
