The application period for the first phase of higher education entry extends until August 4, with the initial day traditionally being the most competitive. On Monday, the Directorate-General for Higher Education (DGES) received 10,183 applications.
This number represents a decrease of 1,859 applications compared to last year.
For the upcoming academic year, universities and polytechnic institutes are offering 55,956 places, an increase of 643 from the previous year, under the general access regime. This includes the national and local competitions, aimed at artistic courses among others.
For emigrant candidates, those of Portuguese descent, or those requesting replacement of entrance exams with foreign exams, the application submission deadline is earlier, on July 28.
Applications must be submitted on the DGES website, and this year students can choose from over 1,100 options across 34 higher education institutions.
Results will be announced on August 24, and candidates placed in the first phase must enroll by August 28.
The second phase runs from August 25 to September 3, with results released on September 14, followed by the third phase from September 23 to 25, with outcomes announced on October 1.
To apply, students need an access password, available through the DGES website, and the ENES form, issued by their school with the final secondary classification and entrance exam results.
Last year, 58,641 students applied in the first phase of the national access competition, 723 fewer than the previous year.
