The environmental movement has announced via a statement that two open letters—’Open Letter: Culture for Ending Fossil Fuels’ and ‘Open Letter from the Music Industry for Ending Fossil Fuels by 2030 and Support for the Student Movement’—have garnered over 100 signatures from artists, musicians, writers, actors, and creators.
Notable signatories include Capicua, Joana Bértolo, Rui Chafes, Paulo Pascoal, Fado Bicha, Manuel Pureza, Gisela Casimiro, André Carrilho, Bordalo II, Lena d’Água, Manuela Azevedo, Nuno Saraiva, Isabel Abreu, and Xinobi.
According to Climáximo, the ‘Culture Letter’ emphasizes the importance of amplifying the voices of students who have been occupying schools and universities since 2019 to demand real action against the climate crisis. It calls on all cultural agents to actively use their platforms to support the fight for climate justice.
The ‘Music Letter’ underscores “the role of music as a driver of social awareness,” demanding a national decarbonization plan by 2030, an end to the use and subsidies of fossil fuels, and support for clean and renewable energies. It extends solidarity to students, emphasizing that “without a future, there is no music.”
The letters invite the cultural sector and wider society to participate in the protest “Our Future Is Not for Sale,” scheduled for Saturday.
The environmental movement points out that this past week saw the release of three other support letters for students, backed by over 100 university and high school faculty members, healthcare professionals, and more than a hundred parents and caregivers.
The release of these letters coincides with a week of school and university strikes called by the Student Climate Strike.
The demonstration “Our Future Is Not for Sale” will take place on Saturday at 3:00 PM at Largo Camões, in Lisbon, supported by over 10 organizations, including the Habita Association, the Civic Movement Pure Air, the National Federation of Doctors, and the South Zone Doctors Union.
