More than 120 municipalities at maximum fire risk

All municipalities in the district of Bragança and the majority in Vila Real, Guarda, Viseu, and Castelo Branco are under maximum fire risk, according to IPMA.

Dozens of other municipalities in the districts of Viana do Castelo, Braga, Porto, Aveiro, Coimbra, Santarém, Portalegre, Beja, and Faro are also at maximum risk.

Much of the Alentejo region and numerous other municipalities in Faro, Lisbon, Leiria, Coimbra, Castelo Branco, Guarda, Viseu, Aveiro, Vila Real, Porto, Braga, and Viana do Castelo are at a very high risk.

IPMA has placed about 60 municipalities in the districts of Viana do Castelo, Braga, Porto, Aveiro, Coimbra, Leiria, Santarém, Lisbon, Setúbal, Portalegre, and Faro at high risk.

About 20 municipalities, mainly on the coast, in the districts of Faro, Lisbon, Leiria, Coimbra, Aveiro, and Porto are under moderate risk.

The fire risk determined by IPMA consists of five levels, ranging from reduced to maximum, the latter being issued when extreme weather conditions, such as high heat and low humidity, significantly increase the likelihood of ignition and spread of fires.

Portugal has been on alert for rural fire risk since August 2, and this year, 63,247 hectares of forested areas have burned, half within the last three weeks, with a total of 5,963 fires, mostly in the Northern and Central regions.

For today, IPMA forecasts a slight temperature drop in the southern region and a slight rise in maximum temperatures in the North and Center. Wind is also expected, sometimes moderate in the highlands, particularly in the south.

Minimum temperatures will range from 15 degrees Celsius in Viana do Castelo to 26 in Portalegre, with maximums between 26 in Aveiro and Viana do Castelo and 40 in Castelo Branco and Évora.
