
According to data provided by the European Union’s Statistical Service, as of 2023, 22.4% of the employed population habitually worked during the weekends.
In the sectors of agriculture, forestry, and fishing, the prevalence of weekend work reached 49.5%, while in services and retail it was 48.5%.
Out of all EU individuals working on weekends, 19.2% were employees, whereas 46.7% of self-employed workers with employees worked during these traditional rest days, and 37.8% of self-employed workers without employees also considered weekends as business days.
Greece holds the highest percentage of weekend workers in the European Union at 32.3%, followed by Italy (30.9%) and Cyprus (26.4%).
Conversely, only 3% of employed individuals in Lithuania worked during weekends, with Poland (4.5%) and Hungary (6.6%) following closely.
