More than 220 occurrences in mainland Portugal by 4 p.m. today

The commander of ANEPC, Pedro Araújo, reported that between midnight and 4 p.m., a total of 202 incidents occurred, not including the city of Lisbon.

The Lisbon Municipal Civil Protection Service recorded a total of 25 incidents between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. today due to bad weather from the depression Claudia, which brought persistent rain, strong winds, and maritime unrest.

Of the 25 incidents in Lisbon, 15 were related to fallen trees, four to collapsed structures, four to road accidents, one to fallen cladding, and one to flooding, according to Margarida Castro Martins, the municipal director of Civil Protection in Lisbon. Most occurrences were in the parishes of Beato, São Vicente, Benfica, Alcântara, and Alvalade.

One incident involved a part of the roof of the Santa Apolónia railway station being blown off by strong winds, falling onto several vehicles. There were no personal injuries, nor was train traffic affected, according to a source from Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP).

The adverse weather conditions caused damage at Santa Apolónia station in Lisbon on the morning of Wednesday, November 12. Part of the roof of the train station platform was blown off due to the strong winds, hitting several parked vehicles.

Regarding the rest of mainland Portugal, ANEPC’s national operations officer stated that most of the 202 incidents occurred in the Centro region, with 77 cases; Lisbon and Vale do Tejo, with 60 cases; and the Norte region, with 54 cases. There were no reports of casualties associated with the adverse weather conditions.

By sub-region, Commander Pedro Araújo highlighted the Porto Metropolitan Area with 24 incidents, followed by Coimbra with 33, and Greater Lisbon with 19.

The majority of incidents involved fallen trees, with 84 situations, collapsed structures with 45, and flooding with 38, the ANEPC official revealed.

The damages primarily involved temporary construction elements and telecommunications and energy transport posts, as well as some roofs affected by extreme wind phenomena, particularly in Greater Lisbon.

No people were displaced due to the bad weather, informed Pedro Araújo, noting that these occurrences were related to strong winds and rain, which occurred mainly in the morning, around lunchtime.

To respond to these 202 incidents, ANEPC mobilized 680 operatives and 271 vehicles.

On Tuesday, Civil Protection urged the population to take preventive measures in light of the forecasts of rain, wind, and maritime unrest in the coming days.

ANEPC warned in a public advisory that flooding and landslides might occur as the weather worsens in mainland Portugal due to the passage of depression Claudia.

Mainland Portugal and the Madeira archipelago have been under weather warnings since Tuesday for various reasons—maritime unrest, wind, or precipitation—at different times between today and Friday.
