More than 240 firefighters battle flames in the Lousã mountains

The sub-regional command of Emergency and Civil Protection in the Coimbra region confirmed that the fire in the Serra da Lousã is currently active, with firefighting efforts underway. The flames are advancing towards the highest area of the mountain, Trevim, which stands at an altitude of 1,205 meters.

Luís Antunes, the Mayor of Lousã, stated that the fire, originating on the western slope above the village of Candal and reported at 1:46 PM today, “was nearly under control before it escalated.” It is now moving towards the mountain’s highest point, located at the boundary between the districts of Coimbra and Leiria.

In light of the situation, the mayor noted that the National Road (EN) 236, connecting Lousã to Castanheira de Pêra (Leiria), is subjected to restricted traffic flow to ease the movement of emergency services.

“We need to safeguard people and property, prevent unnecessary situations, and facilitate the movement of firefighting resources,” Luís Antunes mentioned.

As a precautionary measure, access to the Castle of Lousã and the Sanctuary of Senhora da Piedade has been blocked. Although these sites lie in the opposite direction of the fire’s path this afternoon, this action was deemed necessary due to the proximity and potential advance of the fire, which is now heading towards the municipality’s center.

The National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection’s website indicated that, as of 5:00 PM, the Serra da Lousã fire was being tackled by 241 personnel, supported by 60 vehicles and five aerial units.
