A total of 333,347 registered voters in the national territory have signed up for early voting, which takes place today across municipalities on the mainland and the autonomous regions of the Azores and Madeira.
During the March 2024 elections, 208,007 voters requested to vote early, including the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.
The Ministry of Internal Administration noted that the number of registered voters opting for early voting is the highest ever since this option was extended to all voters.
Voters are required to go to their chosen polling station today, the one they selected during registration, present identification, and indicate the parish where they are registered. After voting, they will receive a duplicate of the security sticker as proof of voting.
If a registered voter cannot cast their vote today, they may still vote next Sunday at the polling station where they are registered.
Among those voting today is Carlos César, the president of the Socialist Party (PS), who will cast his vote at the Ponta Delgada City Hall in the afternoon.
Over 10.8 million voters, both residing in the national territory and abroad, are registered to participate in the early legislative elections to elect the 230 deputies to the Assembly of the Republic.
The early voting system, established by the enactment of Organic Law No. 3/2018, was introduced during the 2019 European Parliament elections and was chosen by 285,848 voters in the 2022 legislative elections.
A total of 21 parties and/or coalitions are competing in the legislative elections, with the Social Liberal Party making its debut this year.
