Data from the Commission for Citizenship and Gender Equality (CIG) indicates that from January to September 30, 2025, 52 women over the age of 66 were referred to one of the 39 shelters in the National Support Network for Domestic Violence Victims (RNAVVD).
This figure already surpasses the total number of elderly women referred to a shelter for the entire year of 2024, which recorded 34 victims, representing an increase of almost 53%.
In contrast, the past four years, from 2020 to 2024, showed fluctuating figures, with 37 cases in 2021, rising to 42 in 2022, dropping to 25 the following year, and reaching 34 in 2024.
Within the RNAVVD, there are currently two shelter homes specifically for women over 65 years old, housing 28 people.
Today marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
