The Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has issued warnings of very high to elevated fire risk in various municipalities across all districts of mainland Portugal.
Forecasts indicate that this heightened fire risk will persist in some districts at least until the weekend.
This risk level, evaluated by the IPMA, is categorized into five levels, ranging from low to maximum. The assessment is based on parameters such as air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, and precipitation over the past 24 hours.
Due to the forecast of hot weather, the National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection (ANEPC) issued a warning on Tuesday about the “very high to maximum” rural fire risk in the interior regions of the North, Centre, and Algarve, advising the public to adopt preventive measures.
Sixteen districts of mainland Portugal are under a yellow alert today due to the expected hot weather conditions.
Bragança and Vila Real districts are currently under an orange alert until 6:00 PM today, after which they will be downgraded to a yellow alert until 6:00 PM Friday.
Viseu, Porto, Faro, Setúbal, Santarém, Viana do Castelo, Lisbon, Leiria, Aveiro, Coimbra, and Braga are under a yellow alert until 6:00 PM today, while Évora, Beja, Guarda, Castelo Branco, and Portalegre will remain under the alert until 6:00 PM Friday.
The yellow alert, the least severe of a three-tier scale, is issued when there is a risk to specific activities due to the weather conditions.
