In a statement issued to the Lusa news agency, dstelecom announced that the expansion of its multi-operator fiber optic network will significantly enhance coverage in municipalities where the company has been operating since 2014.
“Through this multi-operator infrastructure, communities will not only be connected to the future via digital highways but also have the freedom to choose from leading telecommunications operators and the service packages that best meet their needs,” the company stated.
In the Minho Valley, within the Monção municipality, the fiber optic network is set to reach approximately 2,500 new homes, increasing the total to around 16,000 families with access.
The parishes of Merufe, Podame, Riba de Mouro, and Tangil will receive coverage for the first time, reaching a coverage rate of 98% in the municipality.
In the neighboring municipality of Melgaço, the initiative will extend network access to more than a thousand new homes, totaling around 7,700 families with access to the multi-operator fiber network, thus covering 90% of the population.
In the Lima Valley, operations in the Arcos de Valdevez municipality will benefit about 600 new homes, consolidating access for more than 17,800 families, equating to 97% of the population having access to next-generation broadband services.
In Ponte da Barca, the fiber optic network will reach approximately 1,200 new homes, making access available to around 9,100 families.
The parishes of Britelo, Lindoso, and Entre Ambos-os-Rios will be covered under the new expansion, enabling 98% of the municipality to access the fiber optic network, according to the company.
Beyond providing high-speed internet, expanding the network will offer residents in the four municipalities the option to choose between various telecommunications providers. This move is expected to enhance competition, ensuring better pricing and a greater variety of services.
“With this new expansion, we aim to provide quality connectivity and foster competitiveness and innovation in areas traditionally underserved by technological infrastructure. This is another step in our commitment to promote digital inclusion and reduce inequalities in internet access,” remarked dstelecom’s CEO, Ricardo Salgado, as quoted in the statement.
