
The GNR has announced the launch of operation “Moto V” to conduct inspections and patrols ensuring the safety of the MotoGP Portugal event taking place until Sunday at the Algarve International Circuit in Portimão.
The GNR highlighted that in 2024, 6,387 accidents involving two-wheeled vehicles were recorded, resulting in 103 fatalities, 583 serious injuries, and 4,551 minor injuries.
With the MotoGP Portugal taking place at the Algarve International Circuit from today until Sunday, a significant increase in motorcycle traffic is expected on the main routes leading to the Algarve, according to the GNR.
The operation will focus particularly on the districts of Aveiro, Beja, Castelo Branco, Coimbra, Évora, Leiria, Lisbon, Porto, Santarém, Setúbal, and Faro.
As part of the operation, the GNR will also conduct awareness and road inspections targeting risky behaviors such as speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and the incorrect use of helmets or protective gear.
Further, the GNR has announced that the airspace around the Algarve International Circuit will be restricted during the MotoGP Grand Prix period.
Additionally, between 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM on Sunday, the main route heading south to the circuit and the Algarve Highway 22 from the Alvor to Mexilhoeira junctions will be closed.
