The Setúbal Territorial Command of the National Republican Guard (GNR) confiscated 615.40 kilograms of Japanese clams (Ruditapes philippinarum) in Samouco, Alcochete municipality, during a routine inspection carried out by the Unit’s Inspection Unit, with support from the Alcochete Territorial Post, on December 4.
“The Guard’s officers detected a vehicle transporting shellfish without the corresponding Live Bivalve Molluscs Registration Document, preventing the determination of their origin and compliance with legal standards, particularly regarding traceability, which poses a potential public health risk,” the authority stated in a communication sent to newsrooms this Saturday.
The GNR also identified a 35-year-old man and issued a notice of infraction for transporting shellfish without the legally required documentation, which was forwarded to the Food and Economic Security Authority (ASAE).
The organization further emphasized that “the capture, storage, and transport of shellfish without purification or hygiene control can pose a serious risk to public health due to the possible presence of toxins,” highlighting that “the Registration Document is crucial to prevent the irregular introduction of these products into consumption, thus ensuring consumer safety.”
