More than 7 in 10 collective dismissals by August are in micro and small businesses

Between January and August, 359 collective dismissals were reported to the Ministry of Labor, which is 41 more than the 318 registered in the same period of 2024, according to data from the Directorate-General for Employment and Labor Relations (DGERT).

As in July, this represents the highest figure since 2020 when it reached 455.

Of the 359 collective dismissals reported by companies up to August, 128 were from micro-enterprises, 143 from small companies, 54 from medium-sized companies, and 34 from large companies.

In practice, this means that more than seven in ten (75.5%) collective dismissals were recorded in micro-enterprises (35.7% of the total) and small companies (39.8%).

Nevertheless, in percentage terms, the largest increase in the number of collective dismissals up to August was seen in micro-enterprises (an increase of 25.5% compared to the same period in 2024) and medium-sized companies (an increase of 12.5%).

By region, the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region and the North continue to be the areas with the highest number of collective dismissals reported up to August, with 176 and 109 respectively.

The number of workers affected by collective dismissals increased by 27.3% up to August, compared to the same period the previous year, totaling 5,332, according to DGERT data.

Of these 5,332 workers affected by collective dismissals, 5,212 were actually dismissed, an increase of 32.7% compared to the same period the previous year.
