More than 90 municipalities on the continent at maximum risk of fire.

More than 90 municipalities in northern and central Portugal, as well as the Algarve, are at maximum risk of fire today, according to the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).

The districts under this alert include Vila Real, Bragança, Viana do Castelo, Porto, Aveiro, Guarda, Viseu, Coimbra, Castelo Branco, Santarém, Portalegre, Beja, and Faro, as specified by the IPMA.

The IPMA has also placed almost all municipalities in mainland districts under ‘very high’ and ‘high’ risk alerts.

Approximately 30 municipalities, primarily along the country’s coast, are experiencing a moderate or reduced fire risk.

The fire risk, as determined by the IPMA, comprises five levels ranging from reduced to maximum.

Calculations are based on air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, and precipitation over the past 24 hours.

Due to the heatwave affecting the country, the IPMA has issued a red alert, the most severe, for seven mainland districts: Lisbon, Setúbal, Santarém, Évora, Beja, Castelo Branco, and Portalegre.

Bragança, Vila Real, Guarda, Viseu, Coimbra, and Faro are under an orange alert, the second most severe, while the remaining areas have a yellow alert, the least severe.

Today’s weather forecast for mainland Portugal predicts continued hot weather, with generally clear skies. Scattered showers and thunderstorms may occur inland, particularly in northern and central regions during the afternoon.

Fog is also expected in some locations along the western coastal strip, and maximum temperatures are expected to begin decreasing.

According to the IPMA, minimum temperatures will range between 17 degrees Celsius (in Aveiro) and 26 degrees Celsius (in Faro), while maximum temperatures will vary from 24 degrees Celsius (in Aveiro) to 43 degrees Celsius (in Beja).
