More than a hundred police officers protest in Lisbon for better salaries

The protest is being organized by the Sindicato dos Profissionais da Polícia (SPP), the second largest union of the PSP, and includes participation from other police unions such as Sindicato Nacional da Polícia (Sinapol), Sindicato Independente dos Agentes de Polícia (SIAP), Associação Sindical Autónoma de Polícia (Asapol), and Sindicato de Polícia Pela Ordem e Liberdade (SPPOL), the latter two lacking negotiation rights with the Government due to insufficient representation.

The police officers are gathering in front of the PSP’s national headquarters, proceeding at 18:00 to the Ministry of Internal Administration (MAI), where they will present a list of demands.

At the MAI, they will be joined by members of the Associação Nacional dos Oficiais da Guarda (ANOG), which is participating in a protest for the first time.

Gilberto Alves, deputy president of the SPP, stated that the protest focuses on “three fundamental points”, specifically the base salary, allowances that have not been revised since 2010, and pre-retirement.

“The Government is preventing police officers from opting for pre-retirement,” stated Gilberto Alves, expressing concern that these issues are not addressed in the State Budget for 2026 and that the minister has yet to “speak on this problem”.

Tiago Fernandes, vice-president of Sinapol, remarked that the union’s presence in this protest is critical as it is time “to take to the streets to urge the Government to start negotiations rather than conversations”.

According to the Sinapol leader, the Government should have already provided a document to the unions with a proposal outlining its plans for the police.
