More than a thousand students are demonstrating this afternoon in Lisbon in a march to the Portuguese Parliament to defend the end of tuition fees, more support to cover accommodation costs and April prices.

The protest was called by student associations from various higher education institutions and marks National Student Day, which is celebrated on March 24.

The rally was scheduled for 2:30 p.m. in Lisbon’s Rossio Square. At around 3:30pm, more than a thousand students from all over the country began the march towards parliament, chanting slogans already known to several generations of university students, such as “Scholarships yes, tuition fees no” or “Tuition fees and Bologna, it’s all a disgrace”.

The 50th anniversary of the revolution is also being marked by the students and, right at the start of the protest, as the students began to walk up Rua do Carmo, a group of demonstrators threw a banner reading “April is the future” from the access bridge to the Santa Justa Elevator, while the rest shouted “April 25 always, fascism never again”.
