
The mortality rate in Portugal decreased by 0.1% in the first half of the year compared to the same period in 2024, with 62,068 deaths recorded, the National Institute of Statistics (INE) announced today.
Of the total deaths, 104 were children under one year old, compared to 129 in 2024.
In a monthly comparison, June 2025 saw 9,046 deaths, which is 592 fewer (-6.1%) than in May.
Compared to June 2024, there was a decrease of 234 deaths (-2.5%). Seventeen children under one year old died (compared to 20 in the same month of 2024).
The INE also noted that 7,320 live births were recorded in May, which is 305 more (+4.3%) than in April this year and 203 more (+2.9%) compared to the same month in 2024.
In the first five months of the year, 34,744 live births were recorded in the country (234 more than in the same period of 2024), of which 102 were from mothers residing abroad (130 in 2024).
“In May 2025, the natural balance was -2,289, an improvement over the same month of 2024, which recorded -2,478,” highlighted the INE.
The vital statistics regularly released by the INE also indicate that in May, 3,868 marriages were celebrated, 1,646 more (+74.1%) than in April and 239 more (+6.6%) compared to May 2024.
