A woman has been sentenced to six and a half years in prison on the island of São Miguel, in the Azores, on March 26, for the crime of domestic violence against her three minor children.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office of the Comarca dos Açores has also confirmed that the woman’s partner was sentenced to five and a half years for the same crime.
In addition to the prison sentences, the defendants, who treated the children in a “cruel, inhumane, and almost barbaric” manner according to the court, have been subjected to an ancillary penalty of prohibition from contacting the victims. This includes a mandate to stay away from their residence for a period of five years, enforced through remote monitoring technologies.
Both are also required to attend specific violence prevention programs and pay 6,000 euros in compensation to each victim.
The Prosecutor’s Office further reveals that the crimes took place between June 23, 2016, and February 8, 2022, in the municipality of Ponta Delgada.
