Movies in churches and palaces? Black Cat brings summer outdoor cinema

The Black Cat Cinema initiative is returning to Lisbon this summer with open-air film screenings, featuring venues such as churches, palaces, and bars.

At Igreja da Graça, located at the top of the city’s highest hill, audiences can catch ‘Crazy, Stupid Love’ on Tuesday at 9:00 PM. The following day, ‘Midnight in Paris’ will be shown, although this session is already sold out.

From July to October, this iconic Lisbon church will host screenings of films including ‘Grease’, ‘The Lion King’, ‘Love Actually’, ‘La La Land’, ‘Life is Beautiful’, ‘The Matrix’, and ‘Interstellar’.

At Palácio do Grilo, the only remaining film for this month is ‘The Worst Person in the World’, to be screened on Monday, June 30th. However, for the remainder of the season, films such as ‘City of God’, ‘Taxi Driver’, ‘Dirty Dancing’, ‘Parasite’, ‘Poor Things’, and ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’ are scheduled.

The third location for these outdoor cinema sessions is Bicho D’água bar, located at São João Beach in Costa da Caparica, Almada, secluded among the dunes.

These beach sessions are sold out until the end of July, but from August to September 19th, more films will be screened while guests enjoy seafood, burgers, or gourmet snacks, paired with custom-made cocktails.

The lineup at this Costa da Caparica venue includes ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, ‘Footloose’, and ‘Aftersun’.

Tickets are priced at 13.68 euros.

While films start at 9:00 PM, events begin at 7:00 PM with “food and drinks at sunset”, followed by live music from 8:00 PM.

“In case of light rain, the event will continue. In case of heavy rain, the show will be postponed and tickets can either be refunded or used for the new date,” according to the Black Cat Cinema website.
