Mozambican airline requires exclusivity agreement from new manager

An extraordinary meeting was convened on Sunday, June 29, 2025, during which the board reaffirmed that the duties of the president of the LAM management committee must be performed exclusively, ensuring full dedication to the company’s restructuring process, stated Mozambique’s national airline in a communiqué sent to the media.

This concerns the appointment of Dane Kondic, president of the LAM management committee since May, as chairman of the board of Air Botswana, as announced by the carrier over the weekend.

“Air Botswana welcomes its new board. His appointment marks a new chapter in the airline’s journey of service, resilience, and national pride,” read the airline’s statement, reviewed today by Lusa.

According to LAM, Kondic was appointed as the non-executive chairman of the Air Botswana board, a consultative role executed on a “part-time basis and without executive duties.”

The LAM board met today to assess the “potential risks of conflicts of interest,” since both the Mozambique and Botswana airlines operate in the regional market, which is considered a “strategic axis” for the Mozambican carrier’s expansion.

“Following the said meeting, the board decided that Mr. Dane Kondic must perform his duties at LAM exclusively, a decision embraced with readiness by Kondic,” the company said in the document, adding that discussions with the manager are underway to “facilitate the implementation” of the decision, regarded as “essential for the continuation of his duties” in leading the management committee.

LAM further stated it retains “full confidence” in Dane Kondic’s technical, strategic, and leadership abilities, acknowledging his “key role” in the airline’s recovery and modernization.

Dane Kondic, 60, has dual Serbian and Australian nationality and has held various roles in airlines across several countries, including serving as chairman of the board of Portugal’s euroAtlantic.

The Mozambican Institute for the Management of State Shareholdings (Igepe) announced on May 13 the removal of LAM’s management and the appointment of a management committee chaired by Dane Kondic.

The decision was made at an extraordinary general assembly of LAM, within the “framework of revitalizing” the state-owned airline, effectively terminating the roles of Marcelino Gildo Alberto, who was the chairman, along with administrators Altino Xavier Mavile and Bruno Miranda.

The nomination of a non-executive board was also approved, comprising representatives of three state-owned enterprises that became LAM shareholders this year: Hidroelétrica de Cahora Bassa (HCB), Portos e Caminhos de Ferro de Moçambique (CFM), and Empresa Moçambicana de Seguros (Emose).

Consulting firm Knighthood Global assumed in May it has three months to “stabilize and reposition” LAM, explaining that it was “appointed by the Government of Mozambique to help revitalize” the airline and “the country’s aviation sector in general.”

For several years Mozambique Airlines has faced operational problems related to a limited fleet and lack of investments, with records of some non-fatal incidents attributed by experts to inadequate aircraft maintenance.
