The Africa50 group has announced its financial backing for the construction of three electricity transmission lines of 820 KV and a data center in Mozambique’s capital. The financial agreements for these projects were signed in Maputo by the CEO of Africa50, Alain Ebobissé, along with Mozambique government officials, during the general assembly of this infrastructure financing body for the continent held in the capital.
The chairman of Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM), Joaquim Henriques Ou-chim, stated that the agreements will enable the construction of a 220-kilovolt (KV) line from the Metoro district in the Cabo Delgado province, connecting with Marrupa district in the Niassa province. A second line is set to run from Chumuarra in Zambézia province to Inhaminga district in Sofala province, with a capacity of 400 KV. The third, with a capacity of 220 KV, will connect Metoro in Cabo Delgado to Namialo district in Nampula.
Another agreement focuses on the construction of a data center in Maputo, with the Minister of Communications and Digital Transformation, Américo Muchanga, ensuring that the new facility will significantly contribute to the country’s development. “Our country will have the infrastructure needed to support all systems that will drive the development of our economy,” he stated, noting that the funding will also cover the refurbishment of the Maluana data center in Maputo province, southern Mozambique.
Africa50 was established by African governments and the African Development Bank to bridge infrastructure financing gaps in Africa, facilitating project development, financing mobilization, and infrastructure investment.
Maputo is today hosting the Africa50 general assembly under the theme “Mozambique and Africa50: Uniting Infrastructures, Connecting Continents, and Transforming Lives,” as the country officially joins this financial group that consists of 37 shareholders, including African countries and financial organizations.
On December 5, Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) announced plans to construct and operate new solar plants in the Cabo Delgado and Nampula provinces and a floating solar plant at the Chicamba dam in Manica. In a statement, EDM highlighted a memorandum of understanding with Africa50 for the “development of renewable energy production and transmission projects,” as part of initiatives to “drive the Energy Transition in Mozambique.”
Africa50 is set to collaborate with EDM in the development, financing, construction, and operation of the land-based solar plants in Montepuez, Cabo Delgado, and Angoche, Nampula, with installed capacities of 100 MegaWatts (MW) and 60 MW, respectively, including energy storage components.
“The agreements also encompass the development of the first 100 MW floating solar power plant in the reservoir of the Chicamba Hydroelectric Plant, aiming to utilize existing water surfaces for energy production, thereby preserving arable land for agricultural purposes,” the statement said.
