The production area is projected to expand by 26% in the current agricultural season to 64,000 hectares nationwide, up from 50,600 hectares in the previous season (2023/2024), when 177,650 tons of cashew nuts were produced.
To stimulate the sector, which supports thousands of families across the country, plans include the production, distribution, and planting this year of 6,674,660 cashew tree seedlings, an investment of 90 million meticais (1.3 million euros), as well as carrying out chemical treatment of 9,270,000 cashew trees against pests and diseases.
Revenue from Mozambican cashew nut exports had already increased by 71% in 2024, reaching a record 98.2 million dollars (87.3 million euros), according to a statistical report from the Bank of Mozambique detailing exports.
In 2023, these exports had risen to 57.3 million dollars (50.9 million euros), and in the previous year to 51.7 million dollars (45.9 million euros), while in 2021 they accounted for only 30 million dollars (26.6 million euros).
The budget execution report for 2024 from the Ministry of Finance indicated that approximately 4.8 million cashew seedlings were produced and about 4.4 million distributed last year, representing decreases of 8% and 5%, respectively.
“The distributed seedlings covered about 65,303 farming families, of which 16,175 are headed by women, planted over an area of approximately 87,056 hectares with a survival rate of 89%,” states the document.
