An expected migratory movement of approximately 935,978 travelers is projected, as opposed to 692,602 from the 2024/2025 operation,” stated Cármen Mazenga, spokesperson for the joint command established for the festive season.
According to the spokesperson, the anticipated migratory movement for the current festive period represents a 35% increase compared to the flow recorded last year.
Authorities indicate that the borders of Maputo province, including Ressano Garcia, the principal crossing between Mozambique and South Africa, will experience the highest migratory movement during the holidays, with over 662,000 entries.
“It is estimated that about 662,792 will cross the four borders of Maputo province. This number is indeed high, attributed to the calm conditions the country is experiencing,” Mazenga noted.
The official explained that part of the expected travelers are entering Mozambique for tourism and trade, alongside miners and farmers returning to their places of origin.
In order to ensure smooth service, authorities have promised that border crossings will operate under a one-stop model on both the Mozambican and South African sides.
Since 2022, the Ressano Garcia border has been operating 24 hours a day, according to an announcement made at the time by Mozambican authorities.
South Africa, the largest economy in the region, hosts over two million Mozambicans working in mines, agricultural fields, and informal trade, according to the latest data provided by the authorities.
