Mozambique has an annual deficit of 500 million to maintain roads.

The annual requirements for interventions to ensure a road network in good and safe driving conditions are estimated at 53 billion meticais (726.7 million euros). However, the average resources allocated to the road sector have been about 16 billion meticais (82.2 million euros),” stated the Secretary of State for Transport.

Chinguane Mabote was speaking on the sidelines of the annual evaluation meeting of the Integrated Road Sector Program in Maputo. He advocated that for the “rational” use of “limited” financial resources, it is necessary to prioritize the development of knowledge and institutional strengthening in the transport area, “to ensure a better balance between project outcomes and the value of money spent.”

The Secretary of Transport further explained that the resources provided annually cover only about 30% of the sector’s needs.

Mozambique has a road network of 30,464 kilometers, but only 7,344 kilometers (about 25%) are paved.
