“Fortunately, this year, we are undertaking rehabilitation work and we believe that with the upcoming rainy season, the situation will be somewhat minimized compared to previous years,” said Zacarias Calisto, a technician at ANE, as reported by local media.
The work, being carried out over approximately 70 kilometers on the Mopeia-Luabo and Luabo-Nhacatiua sections, is foundational, with a projected completion by the end of November. The construction of drainage structures, such as aqueducts and bridges, is expected to continue through December.
The current rainy season began in October and will extend until April.
Regarding the road rehabilitation package, the Mozambican government announced on May 29 that it has already secured 1.1 billion dollars (945 million euros) for the N1, the country’s main road, representing about a third of the necessary funds. Part of the project is expected to commence this month in Sofala, in the center.
In total, the Government of Mozambique intends to advance with the rehabilitation of an additional 340 kilometers of the N1, including 70 kilometers of the Inchope-Gorongosa section in Sofala province, 176 kilometers of Chimuara-Nicoadala in Zambezia, and 94 kilometers on the Metoro-Pemba stretch in Cabo Delgado.
The referenced sections are supported by a World Bank funding package of 850 million dollars (737 million euros), with nearly half of the amount to be applied in the first phase.
The Government of Mozambique acknowledged at the same time the need to rehabilitate the entire N1 due to its advanced state of deterioration.
