Mozambique plans to reduce the public accounts deficit to 1,525 million

According to the draft law approving the Economic and Social Plan and State Budget (PESOE) 2026, which was approved today by the Council of Ministers and will be submitted to the Assembly of the Republic, the budget deficit will be lower than projected for this year, set at 126.878 million meticais (1.702 million euros).

In 2024, Mozambique’s public account deficit was 155.815 million meticais (2.091 million euros), equivalent to 11.1% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and the previous year it rose to 145.536 million meticais (1.953 million euros), equal to 13.4% of GDP.

The executive’s proposal further states that Mozambique’s state revenue should reach 421.959 million meticais (5.663 million euros) next year.

“The priorities focus on macroeconomic stability, efficiency in public spending, and promoting transparency and accountability. The resource allocation for 2026 emphasizes investment in productive, logistical, and social infrastructure, particularly in transportation, digitalization, roads, education, and health,” said the spokesman for the Council of Ministers, Inocêncio Impissa, at the conclusion of the meeting held today in Maputo.

In the PESOE 2025, approved by parliament, the Government forecasted a GDP growth of 2.9% (1.9% in 2024), an average annual inflation rate of 7%, exports of goods valued at 8.431 million dollars (about 7.379 million euros), and Gross International Reserves of 3.442 million dollars (about 3.045 million euros), equivalent to 4.7 months of coverage of imports of goods and services, excluding megaprojects.

The state revenue for the entire 2025 is expected to reach over 385.871 million meticais (5.347 million euros), equivalent to 25% of GDP, and total expenditures to 512.749 million meticais (7.107 million euros), corresponding to 33.2% of GDP, generating a budget deficit of 8.2%, according to the PESOE approved in May by the Mozambican parliament.
