
The municipal elections on October 12 will see voters elect the leadership of 308 Municipal Chambers, 308 Municipal Assemblies, and Assemblies of 3,221 parishes. In 37 other parishes, the executive will be chosen in citizens’ assemblies due to having fewer than 150 voters.
Provisional data released today by the National Election Commission (CNE) indicates that 817 political forces are candidates in these elections.
The elections feature 618 groups of citizen voters, also known as independent movements, in addition to 181 different party coalitions and 18 political parties.
According to these provisional figures, there are a total of 9,750 lists submitted for the Parish Assemblies (5,499 from parties, 3,337 from coalitions, and 914 from citizen groups).
For the Municipal Assemblies, 1,524 lists are competing (921 from parties, 504 from coalitions, and 99 from citizen groups), while 1,588 are running for the Municipal Chambers (990 from parties and 498 from coalitions, plus 100 from citizen movements).
Chega has candidates in 307 of the 308 municipal chambers (99.6%), the CDU in 299 (97.0%), the PS (alone or in coalition) in 298 (96.7%), and the PSD (alone or in coalition) in 293 (95.1%).
For the 308 Municipal Assemblies, CDU is contesting in 304 (98.7%), the PS in 297 (96.4%), the PSD in 293 (95.1%), and Chega in 248 (80.5%).
Regarding the 3,221 of the 3,258 Parish Assemblies (with 37 being decided in citizens’ assemblies), the CDU is contesting in 1,577 (48.9%), Chega in 1,064 (33%), the PS in 2,554 (79.2%), and the PSD in 2,735 (84.9%).
Overall, of the 3,837 local government bodies up for election in October, the PSD is contesting (alone or in coalition) in 3,321 (86.5%) of them, the PS (alone or in coalition) in 3,149 (82%), the CDU in 2,180 (56.8%), and Chega in 1,619 (42.1%).
