Municipal elections. Polling stations closed at 7:00 PM local time in the Azores

As of 4:00 PM, voter turnout stood at 43.42%, exceeding the rate recorded at the same time four years ago, according to the Ministry of Internal Administration.

Compared to the previous municipal elections held on September 26, 2021, voter participation has increased slightly; at the same hour four years ago, 42.34% of the electorate had cast their votes.

Polls opened at 8:00 AM. In the Azores, they open and close 60 minutes later than those on the mainland and Madeira, due to the one-hour time difference.

This marks the 14th occasion that the Portuguese are electing their local officials in 51 years of democracy.

Over 9.3 million voters were called today to elect leaders for nearly four thousand local municipalities.

The country has 9,303,840 registered voters, fewer than in the previous municipal elections in 2021, which had 9,323,688 registered.

Among the registered voters, 9,262,722 are nationals, while 18,319 are EU citizens and 22,799 are from outside the EU, all of whom are registered in Portugal.

Voters are choosing the governing bodies of 308 Municipal Chambers, 308 Municipal Assemblies, and 3,221 Parish Assemblies, using three different ballots.
