“How did you arrive at that figure of 600 days to replace the cable [of the Glória elevator]? I want to vote, but I want to vote conscientiously,” stated Alfredo Cordeiro, a citizen, during the public intervention period, as the local elections on October 12 approach.
Following this intervention, Cordeiro demanded answers from the Mayor of Lisbon, who is running for re-election. The President of the Municipal Assembly, Rosário Farmhouse (PS), cautioned, “the audience cannot speak.”
In response to this incident, Rosário Farmhouse requested the Municipal Police to remove “the public disrupting the assembly.”
Alfredo Cordeiro was eventually escorted out, after the mayor indicated he would speak with him, also leaving the room.
During the intervention period, Cordeiro emphasized “the right to intervene, the right to transparency, and the right to information,” noting that in his residence in Bairro do Castelo, there is also “a Calçada da Glória,” alluding to the accident involving the Glória elevator that occurred on Wednesday.
“The rails are all rotten, decayed,” remarked the Lisbon resident, mentioning “an illegal construction,” now a garbage site where “flowers are growing in the asphalt,” without specifying the exact location.
Addressing the Deputy Mayor, Filipe Anacoreta Correia (CDS-PP), he sought answers about what happened with the Glória elevator: “Who tested the brakes and under what circumstances?”
The seven PSD/CDS-PP leadership members in Lisbon’s City Hall, including social democrat Carlos Moedas, are attending the Municipal Assembly meeting, where a censure motion by Chega against the mayor is expected to be discussed, along with the presentation of the city’s work review from June to August.
The Glória elevator derailed on Wednesday, resulting in 16 fatalities and 22 injuries, among them Portuguese nationals and people from various countries.
