Municipalities of Lisbon provided homes to more than 5,000 families

Starting this month, over 5,000 families have received homes, surpassing 20% of the total applications submitted by the 18 municipalities of the Lisbon Metropolitan Area (AML) under the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR).

In a statement released today, AML reported that, as of early July, the Institute of Housing and Urban Rehabilitation (IHRU) approved 16,000 (65%) out of approximately 25,000 housing units proposed by the municipalities.

The AML elaborated that out of the 25,000 proposed units, 75% underwent rehabilitation actions, while 20% represent new constructions.

The recently published balance from AML noted that the average cost of these housing investments amounts to 153,000 euros for acquisitions, 37,000 euros for rehabilitations, 171,000 euros for new constructions, and 178,000 euros for acquisitions followed by rehabilitation.

These investments are part of the housing action plan developed by AML following the preparation of the “Diagnosis of Deplorable Housing Conditions” in response to the opportunity provided by the PRR.

The data has been disclosed amid ongoing demolition operations in at least two AML municipalities (Loures and Amadora) which are being contested by the Movimento Vida Justa.

In Loures, operations are underway at Talude Militar, where demolitions have already occurred at the end of June. The city council posted notices on Friday, July 11, in the neighborhood announcing new demolitions and granted residents of over 60 homes 48 hours to vacate.

Similarly, in Amadora, notices were posted regarding the impending demolition of 16 homes at Estrada Militar (Mina de Água), with families also given two days to leave.

The AML is the largest urban area in the country and includes the municipalities of Alcochete, Almada, Amadora, Barreiro, Cascais, Lisbon, Loures, Mafra, Moita, Montijo, Odivelas, Oeiras, Palmela, Seixal, Sesimbra, Setúbal, Sintra, Vila Franca de Xira.
